Molem is an artistic research project initiated by the Croatian-Belgian photographer Hana Miletic. In collaboration with a multicultural group of young individuals from Brussels, Miletic seeks to actively reflect, perform and share the spectrum of cultural diversity in the city, rather than capturing it statically in images. Armed with various cameras, they zoom in on the local suburb of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, better known as Molem in slang.
Molem takes on different forms, but is primarily a subjective and interactive archive consisting of digital photographs and videos. The online component in particular is conceived as a platform and forum for the participants to present and discuss their work. Thus the project can remain open and dynamic, be extended and revised where necessary, and engage in ever-changing dialogues with the equally diverse and variable identities that appear in front of the lens.
Molem is a research project in the visual arts supported by Sint-Lukas Brussels. To date, the following contributors have taken part: Ayoub Ben Abdeslam, Diego Del Rio Fierro, Nabil Fallah, Zakaria Haddou, Ibrahim Khayar, Mohamed Miyouf, Katia Rodriguez, Ines Sahraoui, Hind Sejari, Faysal Touijri and Gary Watat. The contributors are involved in BIS Award, a guidance project by the youth work department of NGO Foyer, a communal ethnic minorities' centre.
